Although “weed” is the name, we love Milkweed! Showy Milkweed and Common Milkweed are native to Colorado, and are essential to picky migrating monarchs!
Why we don’t use Roundup - or other chemicals
The answer here is really two-fold.
1) There are suggested, potential, and according to the World Health Organization’s Agency on Research for Cancer, likely carcinogenic effects from Roundup. See this report by Consumer Notice on RoundUp, and another specifically on Glycophosate, the main active ingredient in Roundup.
2) We are working to move the paradigm towards working with the land, the ecosystem, and the people. This includes not introduces toxins into the equation.
While the suggested or likely effects are still under dispute, we don’t want to take the risk for us, for you, for the land, plants, and animals who live here. And we don’t have to, in order to achieve beautiful and useful landscapes.
Instead, we choose plants that will out compete the weeds. We do sheet mulching. Our garden maintenance crew gets down and pulls the weeds out. We respect that one person’s weed is someone else’s pretty pollinator.
